When I was 12 years old, I made a new friend. It all happened when I volunteered at the local public library for the summer. Now, I’m ashamed to admit this, but I was not much of a reader once I outgrew children’s books. See, I just could not relate to “Sweet Valley High” and was unable to find anything that held my attention. That was until I met Nancy Drew, sitting on the bottom shelf of the Young Adult section.
Every summer I would ride my bike to the library and check out all the Nancy Drews I could, until the unthinkable happened, I outgrew Nancy. Even though Nancy and I went our separate ways, it was too late, I had to get my mystery fix and it was there in my small public library that I discovered such authors as Mary Higgins Clark, Marcia Muller, Sue Grafton, and Lillian Jackson Braun.
When I went off to college, my mystery reading took a serious nose dive. How could I possibly read an “enjoyable” novel when I had to write papers on such topics as the Irish Potato Famine! So for five and a half years, while I toiled over my history and library science texts, I made lists of novels I just HAD to read over the summer.
After graduation, I took a position at a Michigan district library. My favorite part of this job is to spend money on adult fiction and audio books. This means I get to read the book reviews. I get to order the books. I get advanced notice months ahead of time of all the new mystery novels coming out! What could possibly be better than that?
My favorite mystery authors are Patricia Cornwell (Kay Scarpetta only), Lillian Jackson Braun, Marcia Muller, Sue Grafton, and Mary Higgins Clark. When I’m not reading, I also am a big music fan and Beatlemaniac (Paul, if you were only 20 years younger….). I also enjoy dining out, cooking, billiards, and spending time with my wonderful family.
Please feel free to e-mail me.
