| Middle aged, middle weight Virginia librarian James Henry is having some growing pains, or maybe, in light of his diet dinner club, shrinking pains. With the help of five friends, James and the others have been losing weight and toning up. One particular friend of James’s, Lucy, has set her sights on being a sheriff’s deputy and has been working very hard toward this goal, sending James the message that their relationship isn’t going in the direction he would like it to. Still, local reporter Murphy is plenty interested in James, spare tire and all, so things aren’t that bad.
To expand their repertoire and break up the monotony of dieting, the group decides to join Camilla Fields’ class, Fix and Freeze, focusing on the cuisines of Mexico and Spain. They are joined by Murphy and her roommate from college, Kinsley, who has just moved back to Virginia, and her twin sister Parker, a local veterinarian. This new trio complements the five friends, and they find themselves involved in other cross over activities, such as chaperoning an evening trip to a local cave so Lindy can demonstrate the importance of light and shadows to her art students.
Kinsley, a teacher at the same school, is also on the trip, but two students find her strangled to death in the cave. Even when it is learned the twin is Parker, who filled in at the last minute, Lindy is a prime suspect as she threatened to kill Kinsley who was flirting a bit too much with the principal of the school who Lindy’s eye has been on for quite a while. Knowing that the police don’t seriously consider Lindy a suspect, but not taking any chances, the Flab Five, joined by Murphy, begin investigating Parker’s and Kinsley’s lives to see who might want them dead.
They encounter an ex-boyfriend who has Kinsley too dazzled to see the truth about him, and find that Parker’s vet practice, and associations with other vets in the area may not have been as cordial as they appeared. A good investigation is just what James need to take his mind off his women troubles as he tries to figure out why Lucy has suddenly gone lukewarm about their relationship, and decide whether he’s ready to pursue a relationship with Murphy.
Chile Con Corpses is a pleasant mystery with a wonderful setting and cast of characters. James is a likable hero who is very loyal to his friends, and is very sensitive, making what happens between him and Lucy hard for him to understand, but Murphy’s friendship and interest in him will help him make a quick recovery. James is a dedicated dieter, but expresses his frustration with turkey and lettuce, making him even more likable.
The mystery is well plotted, and starts with the question of who was the intended victim. Using a newspaper reporter for the investigation gives James and his friends a good cover. Readers will find themselves celebrating the Flab Five’s dieting victories (such as fitting into your high school prom grown) with them and should easily be able to solve the mystery alongside them as well.
