Cassie Burdette is finally ready to take a shot at her lifelong dream, a spot on the Ladies' Pro Golf Association Tour. T o achieve her dream, she must get through several rounds of Qualifying School (Q-School) starting with next week in Sarasota, Florida. One last visit to her shrink puts Cassie in the wrong place at the wrong time as she finds the psychiatrist whose office is adjacent to her psychiatrist's dead. Worse, he was the psychiatrist for Q-school rival and local girl Kaitlin Rupert, who had just filed molestation charges against her father, the popular high school coach.
Cassie can't tell if she's the chief witness or prime suspect, but police allow her to go to Sarasota as long as she promises to get in touch with authorities in Florida. Cassie does not need the distraction of murder on top of the stress of the tournament and the taunting of Kaitlin.
As the rounds of golf commence, jealousy, some petty, some not, among the competitors becomes very apparent often with Kailtin at the center. Cassie is still horrified when she finds Kaitlin's body on the golf course and fears for her own safety and wonders how she will every keep her mind on her golf game.
Six Strokes Under is a fascinating look inside the world of pro golf. Adding to the authenticity of the book, golf lingo is interspersed, but manageable - either through context or with the help of a short glossary in the front of the book. Cassie is a refreshing heroine who is very real and genuine. Even though she aspires to be a professional athlete, she is not above a cheeseburger and a beer, though she readily admits to any ill effects the morning after. She is easily distracted from her game sometimes, but once she is focused, she digs in with a strong single-mindedness. She has some family demons in her past that are alluded to, but never completely revealed.
There are two possible theories to both crimes and though a second possible scenario is offered, it is pretty clear which way the story is headed. The culprit may stand out very early on, though no motive is offered for this suspect, leaving room for doubt and other suspects to emerge. Six Strokes Under is a strong debut that will appeal to golfers and non-golfers alike.
