| Up and coming LPGA star Cassie Burdette is poised to take a shot at her
first U.S. Women’s Open title, being held at Mount Holyoke College. Cassie
has been practicing her drives and putts and has her neurosis and difficult
relationships under control. Her dysfunctional family —
now that’s another matter, though parents, step-parents and assorted brothers are all on hand, willing to put differences aside to root for Cassie. Missing from Cassie’s
team this time out is Cassie’s caddie and moral support Laura, leaving
Cassie to reach inside for her own inner strength, something Cassie is more
than ready to do.
Cassie plans on leaving her golfer detective image behind during this
tournament, but the death of a young protégé and nasty, negative emails
leave Cassie in the rough once again. An invitation to be the only woman
playing in a tournament sponsored by Cadillac makes Cassie think the emails
are from someone who doesn’t want a female imposed on a traditionally all
male tournament. A day at a spa and some yoga does nothing to soothe
Cassie’s nerves so it’s back on the trail of a killer.
This time, Cassie has some back-up in the form of tournament security and sponsor, Lloyd Pompano who Cassie feels is more blow and show than anything. Joe Lancaster, golf psychologist and all-around buddy, lays low as he has made his feelings for
Cassie clear, but wants to give her space to come around. Ex-boyfriend,
fellow golfer Mike is on the scene with his new girlfriend, but Cassie can’t
imagine either one of them trying to shake her confidence before her big
day.
Golfing information is woven throughout the plot, with more than enough
context for even those who don’t know the difference between a bogie and an
eagle, though a helpful glossary is located in the back of the book. Cassie
has come into her own as a strong main character and shines even more on her
own without Laura and Mike by her side. The mystery moves along at a brisk
pace and there are plenty of twists and turns to keep readers guessing.
Cassie’s extended family add for tension relief and readers get a chance to
meet Cassie’s brother up close providing another look into what has helped
shape Cassie. Final Fore is just plain fun for any mystery reader and may
even inspire a few new golfers.
