Cassie Burdette has a bad feeling about her North Carolina trip. She has been roped into being maid-of-honor for Jeanine Peters, an honor Jeanine’s best friend, Pari Noskin Taichert, would rather have had. Cassie has also agreed to be one third of a golf trio in the Pinehurst tournament. Her two partners are on again/off again love interest Mike and the father who left Cassie, her brother and mother and with whom she has recently been reunited.

Everyone else in the trio has other things on their mind, which is too bad for Cassie who is having one of the best outings of her life. Cassie has just started with a new psychologist, but buddies Joe and Laura are along on the trip to carry her clubs and keep her swinging straight.

Things aren’t going so well on the wedding front for Cassie either. The bride’s father makes a pass at Cassie and a dead body is found on the property and disappears the next day. Mrs. Peters continues with the wedding plans as if all is well, the groom is spending a lot of time of the back nine and Cassie is left dodging Pari’s digs. Cassie has promised to keep her nose clean on this trip, but can’t say no to a friend in need.

Cassie blooms during his outing as she comes out of her shell and gains more confidence. Cassie has made peace with her estranged father and is making in-roads with her half-brothers, despite efforts from a jealous, protective stepmother. Cassie also resolves her issues with Mike and emerges ready to shine and rejoin the LPGA with confidence in herself.

Jeanine’s pre-wedding festivities are extravagant with a certain fairy tale appeal. The disappearance of her father and murder of a local businessman are not going to overshadow Jeanine’s big day. Cassie, of all people, knows people handle stress differently and understands a little why Jeanine and her mother want the plans to continue, though she can’t help but wonder what secrets one or both of them is trying to protect.

A satisfying mystery, an engaging heroine emerging from her cocoon and a delightfully indulgent private country club setting are all the elements necessary to make this read a hole in one.
