| New Zealander, half-Maori Wiki Coffin has made his way in the world as a translator for various ships for the United States. This time he is aboard a U.S. South Seas Expedition exploring the South Atlantic and has ended up in Patagonia around the Rio Negro, famous for its tough inhabitants and their revolutionary ways.
Being clever in many cultures as well as with languages, Wiki is often called upon to serve in capacities other than his official one. This time, he is asked to find a stolen ship, the man who stole the ship and a murderer, who may or may not be the same person, of some bones found on dry land.
Wiki is well-adjusted and is able to deal with all sorts, whether they are salty seamen, explorers full of themselves, or his own father who often causes troubles without meaning to. The Atlantic is a big ocean, though, and there are many places to hide in the unsettled South American wilderness, leaving Wiki to reach deep into his bag of tricks and pull out some of his best to bring the ship home and bring a murderer to justice.
Set in 1839, Deadly Shoals will appeal to fans of the late Patrick O’Brien and C.S. Forrester’s Horatio Hornblower. The setting is accurately drawn, as are the crimes that Wiki is trying to solve. WIki is an intriguing character and some may wonder if he didn’t feel the need to roam and wander the seven seas what his life would be like, whether he would be as successful rooted in one place. Plenty of red herrings and places to hide make the mystery compelling. While the setting is not for everyone, there is plenty of action for anyone who prefers their mysteries with a touch of adventure.
